Tanya Daratrine
General Information
♦ NAME: Tanya Daratrine
♦ CLASS: Human
♦ AGE: 24
♦ GENDER: Female
♦ HOME CITY: Crimson
Character Details
♦ APPEARANCE: Tanya stands at 5’11” with her long red hair swept back by two white wing clips and her eyes are dark brown like a Diglett. Her hands are calloused. She’s well-built, muscle from her tenure in the military, but not as strong as some who’ve had more experience in fieldwork. Her nose looks like it had been broken and reset multiple times. Usually, she wears delicate dresses while not in uniform. There’s a variety of scars across her body due to the nature of her profession.
♦ PERSONALITY: Out of uniform, she’s a gracious woman who’s capable of small talk, hiding her true feelings under a smile. Her vehemence is wallowing after the ceasefire. Tanya doesn’t want to fight again, despite the pressure of her family to do so. Her ultimate desire is to be someone that her parents could be proud of. She struggles to find her identity dissociated from what’s set out for her—if there’s anything beyond what she feels now. The one thing she understands with clarity is that she does not regret any action she has taken towards the Chimaera.
Truthfully, Tanya doesn’t show a depth of emotion toward their kind, but will annihilate them if the order is given. Any moral quandary is squashed with the rhetoric of the Crimson Empire and she chooses to close her eyes to the politics that go behind the choices made by the army. It’s a constant battle within her mind to keep faith for a nation she doesn’t feel anything for. The anxiety may overcome her in due time.
History
She was the warrior that should’ve never existed.
Tanya Daratrine was born into a military family with the expectation that she’d bear children to serve in the Crimson Empire’s army. Truthfully, her life was meant for a series of gilded cages and knowing nothing, but the purpose she had to her offspring. At thirteen, Tanya’s skillset taught her how to be a gracious host to her guests, to cook with a variety of ingredients, and to be exemplary in all the duties of womanhood. Her identity was wrapped around the idea that she would be the best of her class. She took pride in her abilities.
Her brother Eli was the one who should’ve been the soldier, should’ve served under Carissa to expel Chimaera scum, and should’ve not run away to The Citrine Nation to become a scholar. He fled with an eccentric uncle who shared his pacifistic views. The idea that righteousness came from power had not been indoctrinated into her brother’s brain. The idea that someone else must carry his burden did not come to him either.
While she loved him despite his betrayal; it was considered the greatest dishonor to their name for their only son to deny his duty. The Daratrine identity was warped around the idea that they must send a child to serve or they would be dishonored. It fell to her shoulders since her mother never bore a spare, a son that must realize the family goal if the other failed to succeed.
So at fourteen, her father called into his study, where she had not been allowed previously to tell her she must learn. She must train. She must be a good soldier as penance for her brother. Truthfully, for a girl who loved to sew and cook, it was the worst day of her life.
She never asked for adventure, but adventure had chosen her. It was terrible- she didn’t remember her days at Crimson’s military academy fondly. Tanya did not have the years that the other teenagers had to form bonds and her decorum only lasted as long as she had the skills to back them up. It made her a prime target for those who deigned to have someone to attack.
Due to her formative years as a target, she favored the rawness of battle over any other position. It was a way to defend herself against those who believed that she didn’t deserve a place among them. The adage that ‘violence begets violence’ was close to her heart. It was used as justification for the actions she committed against those that hurt her. Frankly, it took Tanya many, endless nights and battles to have her classmates consider her an equal.
She did not stay idle when she left the academy with honors; turns out, a silver tongue and being witness to the greatest atrocities ever committed in three nights—gave her the ability to speak passionately against the Chimaera. Her morals were set aside and the truth was twisted into the ideals of her people. In the eyes of the Crimson Empire, she was a good public figure head, but to deny certain truths caused ramifications to her psyche. She’s not sure if she feels anymore. She’s not sure if she does enjoy the hobbies that she used to love or if it’s a continuation of playing a part. She’s not sure how far she’ll go again, but she still makes her people proud.
Still.
